A Message from the Chair of TESOL Greece
Susan Stetson-Tiligadas

On behalf of the TESOL Greece Board,  I’m so happy to share the programme of the 43rd Annual Convention with you. It’s worth taking a moment to think about that number: 43. For forty-three years, volunteers at TESOL Greece have consistently provided members with an amazing, high-quality, two-day professional development experience. Over forty-three years, a multitude of experts in ELT have imparted their knowledge and helped to keep us abreast of the trends and “big ideas” in the field. Countless friends and colleagues have shared their research, classroom techniques, and strategies with the sole purpose of helping us improve our own teaching practice. We should all be proud of belonging to and supporting an organisation that has done so much to further English Language Teaching in Greece and beyond!

This year, we’re holding our second virtual convention. Ideally, we’d be together in person, and we hope to be back to that soon. In the meantime, the virtual aspect of the convention exemplifies this year’s theme The Future Is Now. Global circumstances have quickly projected us into the virtual sphere, and we made radical changes to our teaching methods and schedules to accommodate those circumstances. Now, going forward, we need to know which things to keep and which to discard. We need information about how new tools and platforms can be  effective and information on how to improve upon tried and true elements. And these are exactly what this year’s line-up of speakers and presenters has in store for us. Our four plenary speakers, Christine Coombe, Cliff Parry, David Read, and Brian Tomlinson will share knowledge to help our learners and to help us professionally. You are sure to find lots of great sessions to attend from the dozens available, presented by colleagues from all over the world.

And though we may not be able to browse through the Exhibitor’s Hall this year leafing through new books as we usually do, we’ll still get to hear about the very latest products and programmes for our students’ learning and for our own in commercial presentations on both days.

We want to extend enormous thanks to our Platinum Sponsor, Europalso, our Gold Sponsor, Burlington Books, and our Silver Sponsor, Express Publishing for their vital ongoing support of our organisation.

And none of this would be possible without the energy and dedication of the TESOL Greece Board: Evelina Agathopoulou, George Chatzis, Agapi Dendaki, Pepy Frytzala, Ioanna Georgakopoulou, Leda Lambropoulou, Lia Kalianos, Christina Konstantakelis, Antigoni Konstanti, Georgia Kourti, Jane Mandalios, Voula Moustakidou, Maroussa Pavli, Chrysanthi Roubi, Stella Senetaki,  and Christina Stamati. My deep thanks to you all!!

All that we do, we do for you, so we hope you enjoy it! See you online!

MEMBER REGISTRATION

Dear TESOL Greece Members,

This message is addressed to ALL colleagues who became members of TESOL Greece, OR who renewed their membership last February 2021 for the 42nd convention.

In the past, we all used to renew our membership during the in-person registration at the annual convention. This year, due to the pandemic, the annual TG convention is online.

Due to our registration system, we all need to renew our membership the latest by February 28th, 2022, so we can be registered and access and attend the convention.

You can renew your membership by clicking on the link below.

Our renewed membership will still count for one full calendar year.

These are extraordinary times and we all need to rise up to the challenge. TESOL Greece has been able to do so from the start, offering to and supporting our members since April 2020, just a month after the first lockdown, organizing world wide creative and inspiring events.

We are looking forward to your supporting our association to the fullest.

The TESOL Greece Board

Aims of the Convention

Dear Colleagues,

On March 12-13, 2022, our 43rd Annual International Convention, The Future Is Now, will once again take place online due to the pandemic. We have a tremendous variety of presentations to learn from as well as four amazing plenary speakers: Dr. Christine Coombe, Cliff Parry, Dr. David Read, and Dr. Brian Tomlinson.

The Virtual Convention aims to offer a weekend of professional development through presentations and workshops on issues related to the convention theme, to the needs we have as classroom teachers, and to the latest research and other current topics in ELT.

We hope you’ll join us for this important annual event that will help us all build resilience and confidence in rising to meet the challenges that the future will bring!

Best wishes,
The TESOL Greece Board, 2021-2022

“Professionalizing Your English Language Teaching”

In this plenary we explore the literature on professionalism from a variety of different stakeholder perspectives as well as present definitions of what it means to be a professional. Other content to be covered include the myths associated with professionalism and the challenges ELT educators face when being professional. General and field-specific strategies both from the literature and from anecdotal perspectives for improving one’s professionalism will also be shared.

Dr Christine Coombe is an Associate Professor of General Studies at Dubai Men’s College, HCT in the UAE. She served as President of the TESOL International Association from 2011 to 2012 and has published in many areas of the profession.

Cliff Parry

“The Future Is in Our Hands”

Some seventy years ago, Keynes warned us democracy was endangered by globalisation. Governments face a dilemma which pits the interests of their citizens against those of the world economy. These fears extend to education yet few question the right of these “invisible hands” to shape our children. What is education? What is your future role? The future is in your hands.

Cliff Parry is Academic Manager at the British Council in Greece where he has been living since 1986. He has a wide range of teaching experience as well as extensive training experience. He has written numerous articles for professional journals and ELT publications, and has authored works on Teaching of Life Skills and Value Acquisition.

David Read

“Is Virtual Reality the future of EFL?”

Virtual Reality (VR) has the potential to transform English language teaching and learning with its ability to transport students and teachers to any situation or location. This presentation will explore and demonstrate what the current developments are in VR and discuss what research tells us about how effective it can be for language learning.

David Read is Director of Technology-Enhanced Learning at the ELTC, University of Sheffield. He has worked in EFL for over twenty-five years as a teacher, teacher trainer and educational technologist, working in countries such as Greece, Morocco, Serbia, Korea and Kyrgyzstan. His research interests include technology education and virtual reality.
